Welcome to the Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia (“CEBCLA”).
I am honoured to be the Academic Director of CEBCLA at the School of Law, Singapore Management University. CEBCLA has an important mandate i.e. the pursuit of rigorous, informed and significant research in commercial law in Asia.
As the Honourable the Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said in the keynote speech at the 2013 LAWASIA conference:
“In this increasingly inter-connected world fuelled by the exponential growth of trade and capital…it is no longer tenable for lawyers to get by with a purely national focus. The complexion of legal practice has changed irreversibly. Lawyers today are expected to be able to advise on transnational deals, provide foreign investors with perspectives on domestic laws and legal systems and also to resolve commercial disputes of an international nature in court proceedings as well as before international arbitral tribunals applying either domestic, foreign or even international law”.
CEBCLA was formed to consolidate the School of Law’s strength in commercial law. The aim is that CEBCLA will act as the meeting point and first port of call for scholars, leading practitioners, governments and policy makers pursuing rigorous, informed and significant research in commercial law in Asia.
